Little Night Music @ South Coast Rep

Tonight we saw a delightful production of Stephen Sondheim's lighthearted musical, "A Little Night Music." It was at the Segerstrom Stage at South Coast Repertory, which marked my first time at that theater (Tim's 2nd time).

It was a fun production with a great cast. The most famous person in it is Stephanie Zimbalist, whom you may know as detective Laura Holt in the TV show Remington Steele (1982-87) alongside Pierce Brosnan and Doris Roberts.

Zimbalist was great in the role as Desiree Armfeldt. Not the best singer in the world, but the part wasn't written for a great singer, it was written for someone who had more acting chops than singing ability, so it worked.

Also in the cast was Joe Farrell, who played the role of Henrik. You may know him as the host of TLC's "Trading Spaces: Family". And if you're a true Sondheim nerd like I am, you would also be impressed that playing the role of Madame Armfeldt was Teri Ralston, who was in the original productions of a handful of Sondheim's shows.

Of all the Sondheim shows, this one is always one of my favorite to see. We also saw a production in July 2004 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in L.A. with Victor Garber and Judith Ivey. It was better than tonight's show, but it also had a bigger budget and venue.

I love the music too. An interesting note, it's virtually all written in the 3/4 time signature, which is my friend Melissa's favorite time signature. (She's the only person I know who actually has a favorite time signature!) :)

It's playing through October 7, so if you're in the area, I recommend checking it out.

Ha! The only thing cooler than the fact that Melissa has a favorite time scale is that you actually know what her's is. Go on with your bad self, James! Saw a pic of Stephanie Zimbalist in the Times today and whoa...she's looking a little more Doris Roberts every day. OLD...

Hey, I got a shout-out in your blog; I feel sooooo special! By the way, it's a time signature.

Time scale/Time signature.

Tomato/Tomahto. :)

Okay, I went back and corrected it. Thanks for setting me straight (if that's possible) ;-) hehe
